I Am One and Also Two
Porcelain clay, monofilament
I Am One and Also Two honors my late mother through hundreds of handmade porcelain ginkgo leaves suspended in a möbius strip, exploring the profound connection between fragility and strength in the face of loss. The ginkgo serves as a symbol of extraordinary resilience — six of these ancient trees survived the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in 1945, continuing to grow amid devastation and becoming beacons of hope. Like porcelain itself, which appears delicate yet possesses remarkable strength, this piece speaks to how we can find power in our most vulnerable moments. When cut, the möbius strip transforms into two intersecting rings, representing the eternal bond between my mother and me — separate yet forever intertwined. Through this meditation on survival and renewal, the installation celebrates how love endures beyond loss and how beauty and growth can emerge from our deepest grief.
